Chapter 5

Josh’s face pixelated before clearing up on my phone screen. He had video phoned me and was patiently listening as I prattled on about life in the woods with a temperamental artist. I didn’t mention the hidden room in the basement or my fear that the label may be the home of a serial killer. I didn’t tell him how I hid in my room all day long, hanging out on the second floor deck and far away from Shane.

He asked, “So when are you coming home?”

“Hopefully by the end of next week.”

“I was thinking we could go out on a date. I got premiere tickets for the new Batman movie.”

He made me feel giddy, as if I were back in high school with a crush on the jock with one difference; this jock wanted me back.

I said, “I really want to see it with you.”

“Good, it’s got your name on it. Get that record done and get your sweet ass back to L.A.”

“Okay,” I said.

“Gotta go, Maya. See you when you get home.”

“Okay. Have a nice evening and thanks for calling. Bye.”

I laid back on my bed, glowing in new love until the sound of race cars speeding around a track broke the country quiet. I left my room and peeked downstairs to see Shane sprawled out on the couch watching TV. He promised he’d work until song two was finished. That was twenty minutes ago. I sighed as I walked down the stairs.

He sat there drunk, brainlessly watching NASCAR. I walked around him with a plastic bag picking up empty chip bags and other garbage as cleaning is my job now. He has reduced me to a glorified nanny/cleaner.

I asked, “Did you finish the song?”

“Nope.”

I stopped and put down the garbage bag.

“What can I do to help you, Shane?”

“You really want to help?” he asked, his eyes still on the TV.

“That’s why I’m here.”

“If you want the songs, you’ll do what I want.”

“And what’s that?”

He looked at me.

“Come down to the room with me and I’ll show you.”

I backed away. “No.”

“Come on. You’re the only one I can trust. You won’t tell my dirty littles secret, will you?”

“People know I’m here,” I said. “They’ll investigate if I disappear.”

“You’re not going to disappear,” he said, standing up. “Come on.”

“Please don’t hurt me.”

“I’m not going to hurt you. Come on.”

What power does he have that makes women do what he wants? My heart was beating hard as I stood frozen in place. Shane walked towards the basement stairs. He stood at the basement door, gazing over at me, beckoning me, until I willed myself to walk towards him like a cautious doe.

I timidly followed him down the stairs, ready to bolt at any moment.

He said, “Growing up, I had this neighbor who sometimes babysat me. She was an older lady whose husband owned an auto body shop. She did things to me I didn’t understand but turned me on. She twisted me.”

He flicked on the studio lights before going into the sound booth where he pushed the wall’s hidden door which unlocked with a click.
